California is on the verge of expanding its oil/gas production from the Monterey Shale formation using hydraulic fracturing (also known as "fracking") and other oil field practices. While these practices have been ongoing for nearly 50 years, fracking has come under recent scrutiny due to concerns regarding groundwater and soil contamination, water supply, air pollution, and the disclosure of the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing fluids. The fight over the Monterey Shale raises important questions concerning how to balance California's growing demand for energy and jobs against environmental protections and the state's already stressed water supply.
