At the dawn of the 20th century, the US electric grid consisted mostly of isolated microgrids run by commercial and industrial users who needed reliability at an economic price. Isolated generation outnumbered centralized power stations, and a concerted effort was made by power companies to increase the load during the day in order to smooth out demand and make prices more attractive for everyone.

Fast forward a century, and there's an emerging trend toward self-sustenance again. Variable pricing, rising costs of maintenance, desire for improved reliability and resilience, and improving economics have made self-sustenance attractive again. Residential and commercial/industries customers a like have jumped at the opportunity to own their own generation, but not without significant impacts to the utilities and remaining customers on the grid.

Join AWWEE in a lively discussion with three experts who are actively engaged in this market transformation today to discuss their thoughts on the future.
